Open-air tourism reaching impressive heights in Spain

Spain is enjoying an excellent summer when it comes to open-air and outdoor tourism, according to the latest figures from two of the country’s major organisations, Federación Española de Campings and the Spanish National Statistics Institute.

The latest data claims that 16.8 per cent of Spaniards have or will take a summer holiday at a campsite this year, with an expected 6.5 million tourists from both Spain and overseas expected to enjoy this holiday type.

Within that, the demand for bungalows or mobile homes is leading the way with a near 100 per cent occupancy rate for most of the summer. Average occupancy for Spanish campsites and holiday parks was estimated at around 90 per cent for the summer, with it peaking at 95 per cent in August.

The data revealed that the average stay for tourists on Spanish campsites will be seven days, with an average daily expenditure of between €180 and €220.

Around 60 per cent of bookings for the summer were made well before Easter, especially for those in bungalows and mobile homes, showing that tourists to Spain are bucking the last-minute trend in order to secure their stay.

Ana Beriain, President of Federación Española de Campings, said: “These figures confirm that we continue to grow and offer the best to our long-standing customers and those who are visiting for the first time.

“Knowing that more than 16.8 per cent of Spaniards trust us with their holidays is fabulous, but it is also a challenge to continue improving. This summer, we could reach 32 million overnight stays and 6.5 million travellers, which demonstrates our potential within the national tourism sector.”
