Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics: The Cortina Olympic Village focuses on sustainable hospitality

In anticipation of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, SIMICO (Infrastructures Company for Milan-Cortina 2026) today presented the progress of ongoing works, with a particular focus on the Olympic Village in Cortina – a project that is gaining attention not only for its temporary function, but also for the innovation it brings to the world of hospitality: the entire village will in fact be built with mobile homes.

Thanks to the collaboration with Crippaconcept, a leading company in the design and production of Made in Italy mobile homes, it was possible to create a temporary settlement designed to host athletes and international delegations, with sustainability, comfort, and reversibility at its core. The presentation took place at the ADI Design Museum in Milan, in the presence of Attilio Fontana, President of the Lombardy Region; Alessandro Morelli, Undersecretary of State; and Claudia Maria Terzi, Regional Minister for Infrastructure and Public Works of Lombardy.

Mobile homes for the Olympics: a sustainable model

The Cortina project stands out as the first within the scope of the Games to rely exclusively on mobile homes. This was not a random choice, but one driven by a clear vision of flexibility and enhancement of the territory: instead of constructing new masonry buildings to be converted later, a removable, adaptable, and barrier-free solution was chosen – one already perfectly suited to Alpine tourist environments.

The village will consist of 377 mobile homes, fully furnished, heated, insulated, and equipped with every comfort. After the Games, the structure will be dismantled and each unit can be relocated to new hospitality destinations, minimizing environmental impact and maximizing the usable life of the housing modules.

Crippaconcept: design, sustainability, and vision

At the heart of this ambitious project lies the technology and know-how of Crippaconcept, a company that has successfully combined the need for comfort and Olympic standards with the principles of eco-design and modularity. The mobile homes provided are designed to deliver high performance even in harsh climatic conditions and comply with sustainability criteria both in production and in use.

This project marks a turning point in the way we conceive temporary structures for large-scale events,” stated Sergio Redaelli, CEO of Crippaconcept. “With this initiative, we are demonstrating how mobile homes can be an outstanding solution not only for seasonal tourism, but also for major international events”.

Olympics and beyond: a flexible legacy

The construction of the Olympic Village is part of a broad and diverse set of projects. According to Fabio Massimo Saldini, CEO of SIMICO, a total of 94 projects are planned, including 50 infrastructural works (many of which are scheduled for completion after the Winter Games) and 30 essential works. So far, 6 have been completed, 10 are in the bidding phase, 37 are in the design stage, and 41 are under construction. Over 50% of the projects are thus currently in progress.

Saldini summarized the key points of the project using the acronym “OLIMPIADI” (the Italian word for Olympics): Pride (Orgoglio), Legacy, Infrastructure, Memory, Planning, Innovation, Accessibility, Dedication, and Italy. Thirteen months of intense work will culminate in the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games. With this project, Milan-Cortina 2026 leaves not only infrastructures behind, but also a replicable and flexible model – one that speaks the language of innovation and sustainability.
